After the death of his father, T’Challa returns home to the African nation of Wakanda to take his rightful place as king. When a powerful enemy suddenly reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king.

Black Panther gets tested when he’s drawn into a conflict that puts the /fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people.

So we got a few knee-jerk reactions from the Black Panther. Check out what the peeps had to say!

Knee- Jerk Reactions

Caryn – I love movies. That isn’t a revelation and confession, movies are entertainment, a distraction, a learning tool, but then there are moments like when I watched Black Panther that I was completely and utterly floored and so filled with emotion, that showed the true power of a relevant and good movie. Black Panther was everything that I wanted and more.

It was absolutely African but it did shy away form the struggles of black people around the world, it was self critical, it was smart, it was different. The characters, OMG, the cast performed their parts like they were part of an orchestra, each character was so well developed and so rich, but they never took away from the main character (T’Challa) or the main plotline, and the conductor – Ryan Coogler pulled it altogether so well. So knee jerk – ya, I loved every minute of it. Give me more African stories please!

Brad – I love how Marvel have been experimenting with their film styles & directors in their last few films. The first 2 phases felt very “safe” (with the exception of Captain America: The Winter Soldier), but I think when Guardians of the Galaxy did so well, Marvel Studios realised that different does not always mean bad. Black Panther was no different.

This is one of the first MCU films where I cared about almost all of the characters. They are all so well written! I think it says something that T’Challa isn’t even my favourite character in the film (and I loved him).

This is also one of the first films in a while to give me proper goosebumps. This had everything to do with how proud it made me of our beautiful continent. Even though Wakanda is (obviously) not a real country, it all felt so familiar to me. From the world-building to the costume design, there was obvious care taken in the “authenticity” of Wakanda.

I loved how this could work as a standalone film, how it doesn’t need the MCU lore to be a great film.

Overall, I absolutely loved Black Panther, and I can not wait to see it in IMAX!

Stephen – Black Panther is not only one of the most entertaining movies of 2018 so far, but it’s also one of the most important. The subtext of the film goes deep into black consciousness and is unashamed of what it is. The film boasts unique and interesting new characters that are fleshed out, and the world of Wakanda feels lived-in despite looking like no other city we’ve seen before.

Erik Killmonger is honestly one of the best superhero movie villains I’ve seen in a while, with motivations that are so well supported by a tragic backstory that makes you feel his pain and empathize with him, even when you may disagree with his methods. This is the mark of a well-crafted villain, and I’m glad we’re back to a point where villains of this caliber exist.

Black Panther blew my mind and I can’t wait to see it at least 3 more times.
