Back to Black (2024) – “Winehouse Forever” – Review

Singer Amy Winehouse’s tumultuous relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil inspires her to write and record the groundbreaking album “Back to Black.”

Review

Josh (Guest) – I went into watching Back to Black with very low expectations. I wasn’t certain that Amy Winehouse’s inimitable personality could be accurately portrayed. Marisa Abela made a good attempt at embodying Amy and her voice, but it felt unconvincing and rather like a caricature.

Looking past this disparity, the film was engaging as it tracked Amy’s turbulent relationship with her father (Eddie Marson), and lover, Blake (Jack O’Connell), and the pervasive substance abuse associated with this. However, I wonder how much of this telling was their perspective and influence rather than her own.

Ultimately, the film gave a sympathetic perspective of her life, but it did not feel as harrowing as I anticipated. I could appreciate this, given the tough hand dealt to her by the media, but it felt hollow and overworked. As if certain truths were being withheld or not fully fleshed out in order to create a perspective that never fully meshed with the reality of her life. Regardless of authenticity, the film was well produced even if it did miss the mark overall. 6.5/10
