A locally produced High School drama set around the same themes of Romeo & Juliet, filled with teenage hi-jinx.
Review
“Siddiqah George” (Guest) – Jou Romeo is a locally produced romantic comedy that will appeal to all ages. The two main characters couldn’t have more opposite personalities where Marko Marais (Ruan Wessels) is handsome, charming and the school’s most popular cricket player. Yvette Verwey (Elani Dekker) on the other hand is a quiet intellectual and a member of the very unpopular drama club.
Having just had the budget cut for their play and tired of seeing the arts pushed aside for more popular activities such as cricket, Yvette and the rest of the drama club decide to feature Marko as the male lead in their Shakespearian play, Romeo and Juliet, in order to boost ticket sales and promote the arts. Marko is forced to agree to Yvette’s plan as he is failing at school and desperately in need of her tutoring.
The two characters quickly learn that there is more to each other than meets the eye and that making assumptions about people based on stereotypes could prevent one from forming valuable relationships in life. Romance also blossoms between Yvette and Marko but this does not sit well with a lot of people at the school. The play and new romance is then threatened by the exposure of a lie.
Despite the movie being predictable to a certain extent, it is still worth the watch as there are some comedic and witty scenes which the viewers will appreciate.
