Man behind the Mask: Matt Reeves

For those that know me, I’m a huge Batman fan. I loved what Chris Nolan and Christian Bale had done for the on-screen adaptation of the character. Then came Ben Affleck who brought all the brutality to the Cape Crusader, in the amazingly meh Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.  Needless to say, I lost my goddamn mind to hear Ben Affleck would be directing the upcoming The Batman .

And then reality hit…Ben Affleck would no longer be directing the film…

And may be off the project entirely…

Yoh, I’m kak sad…

But back to the matter at hand. Matt Reeves has just signed to be the director of The Batman, but  just who is this bra?

Matt Reeves actually has a pretty jas record, having written and directed several films. These include Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (Writer), Cloverfield (Director),  Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (Director), and the upcoming War of the Planet of the Apes (Director, Co-Writer). He was also the executive producer for 10 Cloverfield Lane, which was most lekker mind you.

What’s most interesting about this is that Reeves is constantly improving on his craft. Cloverfield was brave attempt at something different. In my opinion, it worked. His work on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was jas! The film had a healthy balance of action and drama. It was smart and still entertaining. So I have complete faith that War for the Planet of the Apes will ruk.

The Batman will be a totally new challenge for Reeves though, he has no experience in the comicbook/superhero genre. Is it a bad thing? Not really. Reeves can inject a freshness to the genre that IS oversaturated. Fresh eyes will keep the genre fresh, often adding a different perspective to formulaic genre.

Matt Reeves took the Planet of the Apes franchise in a fresh direction, and he could do this for The Batman. He could spin it on its head and look at why Batman is a villain. Who knows! The most important thing is that Warner Bros. give him the scope to achieve his vision. STOP CHANGING THE FILM IN EDITING ROOM! Please…yoh…we deserve nice things too.

I’m keen to see what Reeves can do for The Batman. I’ll put my faith in the bra and give him a chance. For now we hope and pray that Batfleck remains on board.
